Gannett’s Courier Journal and ABC News ’20/20′ Nominated for Peabody Award for Joint Investigation ‘Say Her Name: Breonna Taylor’

Gannett’s Louisville Courier Journal, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, and ABC News “20/20” today received a nomination for a prestigious Peabody Award for outstanding work on the joint investigative documentary “Say Her Name: Breonna Taylor.”

Since the fatal police shooting of Breonna Taylor on March 13, 2020, Courier Journal reporters have been on the ground covering every aspect of the local case that helped spark a racial reckoning in Louisville and across the world, raising questions about systemic racism and police brutality against Black Americans.

The Courier Journal collaborated with ABC News on the two-hour documentary which conducts an in-depth assessment of the evidence in the case by reviewing 9-1-1 calls, interrogation tapes, jail house calls, surveillance photos and hundreds of pages of police records.

The documentary features “Good Morning America” Co-anchor Michael Strahan’s exclusive interview with Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly, an officer involved in the shooting, and Correspondent Deborah Roberts’ interviews with Tamika Palmer, Taylor’s mother, and Ju’Niyah Palmer, Taylor’s sister. The program also includes interviews with Kenneth Walker, Taylor’s boyfriend; Bianca Austin, Taylor’s Aunt; Jamarcus Glover, Taylor’s ex-boyfriend; and Lonita Baker, Ben Crump and Sam Aguiar, the Taylor family’s lawyers. It also features rare footage from the tragic evening, including the moment the SWAT team arrived on scene, Walker’s arrest, which was ultimately dropped, Walker’s ride to the police station and more.

“Say Her Name: Breonna Taylor” debuted on “20/20” as a broadcast special event on Nov. 20, 2020. The full documentary can be viewed online here.
