Baking soda, more commonly known as bicarbonate of soda in the UK, is an alkaline substance used in baking. However, today we are using it more and more for cleaning purposes. Baking soda is mildly abrasive and makes a great natural scouring solution and it also takes away stubborn stains. Express.co.uk reveals how to clean your oven with baking soda.
Who can honestly say they enjoy cleaning their oven? It’s a gruelling process which requires lots of physical effort.
Cleaning your oven will take you at least three hours or even longer if you haven’t tackled the task in a while.
The bad news is, you need to clean your oven about four times a year to get rid of germs and unsightly grease marks.
The good news is, you can speed up the affair by using one cheap ingredient – baking soda.

To clean your oven with baking soda, all you need is baking soda, salt, water, a rubber spatula and paper towels.
Mix 150g of baking soda, three tablespoons of salt, and six tablespoons of water together in a bowl.
Stir until you have a thick, sandy paste with the consistency of cake icing.
If it’s too thick, add an extra half a tablespoon of water.
This makes a lot of paste and you’ll need it all to clean the oven floor, back, sides, and ceiling.

Take racks out of the oven and smear the paste all over the metal or glass surfaces.
Close the oven door and leave the baking soda mixture to sit overnight while the oven is cold.
When you wake up, the paste will be hard and you can use a rubber spatula and warm, wet paper towels to loosen it up.
Wipe away the baking soda and dirt to reveal a stain-free shiny surface.
Every few weeks you should clean your oven using a lighter method.
To do this you will need a tub of baking soda, some water, a rubber spatula or cleaning gloves and paper towels.
Mix half a cup of baking soda (about 230g) with three tablespoons of water in a small bowl.
Stir the ingredients together until it forms a paste with the consistency of pancake batter.
Remove the racks from the oven and using the spatula or gloved hand, smear the paste over the dirty parts – metal or glass.
Leave the paste to sit for 15 to 20 minutes and then wipe it away with wet paper towels.
Wipe the oven’s interior with a new wet paper towel soaked in a 3:1 mixture of water and vinegar.
