Households are experiencing an unprecedented rise in prices due to factors in the wholesale energy market and the war in Ukraine. In October, the Government’s price guarantee was implemented which capped energy bills at £2,500 for families with average usage. Despite this, bills still rose by 27 percent with many households turning to energy suppliers for further support through grants. Here is a full breakdown of the schemes currently available by some of the nation’s biggest energy companies.
Two separate schemes are operated by this energy supplier’s trust. One is for existing customers and another for non-customers.
While the grant scheme for customers closed on July 8, 2022, the other scheme for non-customers is open for applications and available to residents living in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Most grant schemes from energy suppliers are reserved for their customers but British Gas’ offering is well-known and praised for being available to non-customers.
The ‘Individuals and families fund’ awards up to £1,500 in support, but applicants must have had help from a money advice charity in the last three months, such as Citizens Advice.
As well as this, applicants seeking financial support need to be currently in fuel debt of £250 or more in their active gas and electricity account.
Applicants must also have less than £1,000 in savings and have not received any debt grant money from British Gas within the last 18 months.
To be eligible, anyone applying must be considered as being in fuel poverty of £250 or is at risk of falling into it.
On top of this, applicants must have reached out to a money advice charity for guidance in the last three months to qualify.
Furthermore, information on this £1,500 energy bill grant opportunity can be found on the British Gas Energy Trust website.
This supplier’s Customer Support Fund is only available to those experiencing hardship or struggling to manage energy debt.
Unlike British Gas’ grant, this scheme is only for customers and is designed to provide crucial guidance, as well as support, in managing energy debt and finances.
Support is provided through the Priority Services Register (PSR), which is a free-of-charge service.
On the EDF Energy website, the suppliers list the following ways the supplier can help customers through this service:
- Free gas safety checks to ensure appliances are safe
- Smart meter to be installation
- Regular meter checks for those unable to do so
- Assistance in managing debts and getting people onto benefits they are entitled to.
Through this supplier’s Hardship scheme, additional support for customers will be provided to those considered as being most in need.
This is part of Ovo Energy’s wider £50million Customer Package which includes discounted products. Direct Debit relief, emergency top-up, and payment holidays for those struggling to pay energy bills.
The supplier launched this package on October 1, 2022 and is set to continue until March 31, 2023.
For those dealing with immediate financial pressure to pay off energy bills, Ovo Energy will be able to reduce direct debits by up to 15 percent until the next direct debit.
A Hardship Fund is available through this energy supplier to those who claim certain benefit payments from the DWP.
Among the qualifying payments are Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance, Pension Credit and Employment and Support Allowance.
Those on low income could also be entitled to this assistance which clears or reduces arrears by crediting a customer’s ScottishPower energy account.
