How long does a car service take?

Getting your car serviced may seem like a hassle in terms of time – but it’s essential to keeping a car running safely and efficiently.

If your car is booked in for an interim service then you can expect the waiting time to be around one to two hours.

However, if your car is booked in for a full service or a major car service then you may want to take a book or a magazine to keep you entertained – as this can take around three to four hours.

It is important to remember that each type of servicing can take longer depending on the amount of work that needs to be done.

What is a car service?

A car service usually involves a mechanic thoroughly inspecting a vehicle for damage and carrying out any repairs – such as an oil change or changing parts that may be scheduled for replacement.

It is important to know that there are three different types of servicing – interim, full and major.

An interim service is also known as a short service and is carried out  every  every 6 months or 6,000 miles that your car has driven.

A full service should be carried out every every 12 months or 12,000 miles – whichever comes sooner.

How much does a car service cost?

All motorists know that driving isn't cheap – and that includes the cost of servicing your vehicle.

However, keeping your car serviced will save you money in the long run.

The average cost of a full car service in the UK is around £185 – though this of course depends on the garage, the model of the car and repairs that need to be done.

The main cost factor in servicing is usually the labour and time it takes the mechanic to carry out his or her work – therefore a full service will typically cost more than an interim service.
