NatWest shares ‘tell-tale signs’ to avoid growing scams

NatWest has issued a warning as not all customers will get their money back if they fall victim to fraud. To help Britons stay vigilant they have shared their tell-tale signs for people to look out for.

New figures show that a total of £249.1million was taken by scammers tricking customers into bank transfer scams – also known as authorised push payment fraud.

The figure represents close to half of the total amount stolen.

Campaigners said it showed the need for swift implementation of new rules governing the banking industry.

On their website, Natwest shared their “tell-tale signs” of a scam.

It states: “Before people pick up the phone or respond to an email, fax or letter look out for these telltale signs – and think carefully about what you are being invited to do”.

A scam will usually offer people something for nothing when they have had no previous correspondence or involvement.

Britons will usually get an “opportunity” to earn easy money in exchange for an up-front cash fee and perhaps their account details.

People may be asked to call a premium rate phone number to collect a prize too.

Additionally, they urged Britons to watch out for poor spelling and grammar.

There will often be a PO Box number in the contact address of the company being used so people can look out for that.

Lastly, the scam may involve payment being made to an unconnected party in a different country.

Out of the £249.1million taken by crooks, only £140.1million – or 56 percent – was returned to victims, data from UK Finance shows.

Whether or not people can get a refund will depend on their individual case.

NaWest urged Britons to “stop and think”.

They suggested some steps that people can take.

Never disclose security details, such as your PIN or full banking password.

Don’t assume an email, text or phone call is authentic.

Don’t be rushed – a genuine organisation won’t mind waiting.

Listen to your instincts – you know if something doesn’t feel right.

Stay in control – don’t panic and make a decision you’ll regret.
