Cleaning your oven may be a chore on your New Year list, but it can certainly be a daunting one. While numerous products line the supermarket aisles boasting an easy way to scrub your appliance, they can contain harsh chemicals.
Luckily, there are a number of natural cleaning methods that can be employed.
In a Reddit forum dedicated to “oven cleaning hacks”, one user shared their simple but “successful” method.
Reddit user TNpitt-mama explained how they made use of two simple household ingredients you may have tucked away in a cupboard at home.
The user said: “Many of the store-bought oven cleaners work wonders but emit harsh fumes.
“It’s not always convenient for me to evacuate my house for a few hours so I use the following: [A] squirt bottle, baking soda, water and vinegar.”
Baking soda, or bicarbonate of soda, is often used in cleaning because its alkaline properties are able to dissolve organic compounds such as dirt and grease.
The mineral structure of baking soda particles also acts as a great abrasive to clean without scratching surfaces.
Vinegar is another natural ingredient often used for cleaning.

It makes a great cleaner and disinfectant because it’s made from acetic acid.
The acidic nature of vinegar is so powerful it can dissolve mineral deposits, dirt, grease, and grime.
Vinegar can also kill some bacteria.
Reddit user TNpitt-mama said they first “fill a suit bottle with water and mist” the inside of their oven.
Next, they “sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda” in the oven cavity.
Some baking soda actually comes in a bottle with a shaker top, making this step even easier.
The user recommends leaving this to sit for two to three hours.
Then, fill a squirt bottle with vinegar and “mist” the inside of your oven.
