PIP is awarded to those who need help with the costs associated with long term ill-health. The payments can total hundreds of pounds a week but claimants are required to keep the DWP up to date with their circumstances for the money to keep coming through.
To be eligible for PIP, a claimant must be aged between 16 and state pension age.
They must also have a physical or mental health condition or disability where they:
- Have had difficulties with daily living or getting around (or both) for three months
- Expect these difficulties to continue for at least nine months
Where claimants are eligible, they’ll receive a payment which can be made up of two elements, a daily living and mobility part.
Daily living payments will either be £60 or £89.60 per week.
Mobility payments will pay out either £23.70 or £62.55.
However, claimants will usually be regularly assessed to ensure they’re getting the right amounts.

On top of this, claimants must keep the Government updated with any changes in their circumstances.
These changes could impact what is paid out and the DWP explains the PIP enquiry line bust be called if:
- Your personal details change, for example your name, address or doctor
- The help you need or your condition changes
- Your condition has worsened and you’re not expected to live more than 6 months
- You go into hospital or a care home
- You go abroad
- You’re imprisoned or held in detention
- Your immigration status changes, if you’re not a British citizen
This is important to note as not only may payments stop if these changes aren’t reported, claimants could be taken to court or have to pay a penalty if they give wrong information or fail to notify the state.
To report changes in circumstances, claimants can call the PIP enquiry line on 0800 121 4433.
Claimants may also have to repay money to the Government if they’ve been overpaid.
This could occur as a result of changes not being reported straight away, wrong information being provided or simple mistakes.
Claims for PIP can be made over the phone or through the post.
Following an initial claim, applicants will go through an assessment process.
This process will determine how much should be paid and it will be carried out by an independent health professional.
Should a claimant disagree with a decision, they will be able to have it reviewed under mandatory reconsideration rules.
