The Warm Home Discount is a Government-led scheme that provides financial support to those who need financial support to cover their energy bills over the winter months. Customers who meet the specific criteria could get a rebate of £150 on their electricity bill. However this year, Shell Energy is funding the payment of an additional £150 to its Warm Home Discount customers.

This means they will receive a total payment of £300 to help with the cost of energy this winter.

The announcement today is in relation to those who are eligible to receive the extra cash in Scotland and not Shell Energy customers in England and Wales.

Shell Energy has stated those in England and Wales do not need to apply for the scheme.

This is because those who are eligible have already been identified by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and will be contacted by the energy company in the next few days.

This is a change from previous years and means those who applied before, won’t need to again this year.

Shell Energy has urged its Scottish customers to apply for the scheme if they believe they could be entitled to the support.

According to the rules, people can sign up for the Warm Homes Discount scheme if they receive benefits such as Pension Credit, income-related benefits or Universal Credit.

Households with an annual income of less than £17,005 could also be eligible as well as low-income households with children living with them.

Those who receive additional benefits or premiums related to their health or ability to work should also try and apply for the scheme.

To apply for the Shell Energy Warm Home Discount people in Scotland will need to be taking their electricity supply from Shell Energy.

Sadly, those who are gas-only customers cannot apply.

The application form can be found on Shell Energy’s website.

To apply, people will need to provide Shell Energy their name, address, Shell Energy account number and contact details.

They will also need to tell the energy company about the benefits that they or their partner receives.

If someone does not have an email address, Shell tells them to either get a family member or friend to complete the application, or call a support charity such as Citizens Advice or Age UK.

Shell Energy noted people will need to have an email address to complete their application.

The measure is part of a newly announced £50m package of support from Shell to alleviate some of the financial hardship of its customers.

The money from the Warm Homes Discount scheme is not paid directly to a person, it’s a one-off discount on their electricity bill, between October 2022 and March 2023.

The money is paid directly by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to energy suppliers and deducted from electricity bills.

If someone is on a prepay meter, they will usually be sent a top-up voucher.
