Speechless woman breaks down after Undercover Boss’s $25,000 gift
Undercover Boss follows CEOs and chief executives who choose to go undercover in their businesses. Often these company heads will gift their employees money at the end of an episode, with one woman being left in tears after receiving $25,000 (£20,089.25).
Sheldon Yellen, the CEO of Belfor, appeared on the hit CBS reality television show where he went undercover and saw the day-to-day operations of the business through the eyes of his employees.
One of the workers he was most impressed with was Brenda, who regularly dealt with customers in person for the disaster restoration company.
He said: “I’ve been watching Brenda and her interaction with customers. She just eases in the conversations just automatically puts the customer at ease.
“I’ve been blessed in my life financially to be where I’m at and I have had an opportunity this week to meet people that are working harder than I ever have.”
Shadowing Brenda during a visit to a customer’s home, Mr Yellen learned more about her backstory.
She told the Undercover Boss: “I was homeless for a little bit and I lived in a box car from a train. Grandma tried to teach us what she could. I’m glad I’m here. I could be under a bridge.”
Brenda shared that the reason she is so focused on her job and making customers happy is that she believes “that’s all I got to offer”.
Brenda said: “I went to water loss classes. I was going to try to be a water tech but I couldn’t pass the test because I don’t have an education.
“All those numbers but I couldn’t get it. I just couldn’t read. I couldn’t pass the written test.”
After spending time with Brenda, Mr Yellen divulged his true identity at a later meeting and offered her $25,000 (£20,089.25) in financial support.
The chief executive explained: “Brenda, being with you was an honour. Let me share with you why.
“You made me feel comfortable the minute I met you. I was so impressed with your spirit and your passion.
“I heard you tell me how you were robbed of an education. Well, we’re giving you $10,000 (£8,035.70) toward the education of your grandchildren.
“I’m not done. I know how important it is for you to get your water damage certifications and I am putting you directly in touch with our head of training and development.”
As part of Mr Yellen’s gift, Belfor’s training head will walk Brenda through the training class and do a verbal test instead of a written one.
He added: “I’m certain that with your skills you will pass and you will stand among your peers with your head tall.
“I thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me get to know you and for allowing me to give you an additional $15,000 (£12,053.55) bonus check for you to do whatever you’d like.”
Shocked by this gesture, Brenda shared that she was at risk of losing her house but now this money will help her prevent it from happening.
The Belfor employee said: “I don’t even know what to say. When somebody says you’re smart and you’re 50 and you never heard that in your life, it makes me feel proud.”
